‘I love you dear’ that’s an awful thing to say
lovely to my ears, dreadful to my knees
Wish upon afar, the future ain’t so bright
Will we ever clear the atmosphere
that breaks the song from sight
This is the first letter and the last
that you’ll ever receive from me
I’m going to shout I love you
clear and bright and blue
But don’t you worry endlessly
as you dream about the past
Names will change, you’ll stay the same
a puzzle to the angels, hopeful to the last
‘I love you dear’ that’s an awful thing to say
lovely to my ears, dreadful to my knees
Wish upon afar, the future ain’t so bright
Will we ever clear the atmosphere
that breaks the wrong from right
There’s no place here I’d rather be
than knitting your felt heart
With the words that come so frayed
from a pocket full of gray
A paper matter breaks apart with a solitary mark
to sad maybes we’ll wait and see
how the drama lacks a part
You’re a treasure to the ocean
and a puzzle to the angels
Break of dawn and you’ll be gone
across a lifeless sea, high and dry,
the only green you’ll ever see envy
In the games we play you’ve never been
a girl that shows her cards, then again
I wish again I only knew your tells
I’ll go with you a thousand miles
and lie before the desert lone
while you’re walking down the aisle
a vision all my own
‘I love you dear’ that’s an awful thing to say
lovely to my ears, dreadful to my knees
Wish upon afar, the future ain’t so right
Will we ever clear the atmosphere
that breaks the dark from night
The end I fear is so sincere
so can you tell me please for once
What can I do to be with you
the Lord will have his say
I’ll go with saints and martyrs
who never fail to pray, then have a drink of beer,
I’m sorry dear, this letter came so late
‘I love you dear’ that’s a lovely thing to say
awful to have known you, come back another day
Wish upon a shooting star that stands upon my chest
It’ll pierce the skin and cut the chord, always second best
So I’ll go with God and look for you wherever angels slay
you’re a puzzle to the ocean, a treasure in my heart
